The Articles - Flannery O'Connor

I'm sure I came across this Warren Coffey review of Flannery O'Connor's works while in college.  I had an absolutely horrible English professor who did at least introduce me to O'Connor's short stories.  For the introduction I am very grateful.  I devoured O'Connor's writing and return to it often.

I've kept this review, written in Commentary in1965, a year after O'Connor's death from Lupus at the young age of 39.

My favorite excerpt refers to her Dickensian ability to create odd characters and put them face-to-face with everyone else:

"To extreme and painful situations she brought. . .a great deal of mocking ironic poise.  If she has no girls without noses, she has them with artificial legs and acne-blued faces.  She has one-armed men and men covered with tattoos, and she is fond of thrusting this grotesque part of humanity into confrontations with characters more comfortably housed in the flesh."

Take some time to read the review here.
