Editorial comment: I am ok with spending money on athletic facilities but could we spend just half that money on libraries at educational institutions? After all, it IS an important mission. Schools should be libraries surrounded by classrooms.
What if we built gathering places at libraries in all our schools - a social world built around books and magazines and newspapers and resources??

I have in the past designated gifts to my alma mater for the library only. My appreciation of notably significant professors and my library experience were the two things officially put forth by the institution that occupied major places of joy and influence in my private world as an undergraduate...the most stimulating four years of my life in some ways-- they have never left me.
