Anticipation

A 22-pound turkey rests in a brine downstairs.  The innards and neck are ready to be made into the base for gravy.  My sister has made a peanut butter pie.  My brother and sister-in-law are in charge of creamed corn this year - two dozen ears worth I believe.  Mom has five eggs worth of noodles drying in preparation for transport.  Thirty ounces of oysters are waiting to be scalloped.  Two bags of potatoes.  We'll also have green bean casserole.  There is a pumpkin cake and a derby pie.  Cabernet Sauvignon and Old Vine Zinfandel will accompany the first Samuel Smith's Winter Welcome of the season.  Perhaps just a nip of Knob Creek to enhance digestion?

Have I mentioned the stuffing?  Sausage and celery and onions and apples and croutons and seasoning. . .My wife is one of those seemingly effortless cooks.  Where I make productions of cooking, she walks into the kitchen and out come dishes of such indescribable delight.  The smells alone are worth the time.

Appetizers, oh the appetizers. . . shrimp and olives and vegetables and so many other good things.  I am positively giddy with anticipation.
