The meeting
In April of 1787, a sixteen-year-old Ludwig van Beethoven traveled to Vienna to attempt to study under the master, a 31-year-old Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The record is sketchy, but the two almost certainly met. Mozart was quoted later as saying of Beethoven "remember that name, for you will hear it often." Two weeks into his Vienna visit, Beethoven was called back to Bonn to attend to his dieing mother. When Beethoven returned to Vienna in 1792, Mozart was dead.
Instead of studying under Mozart, Beethoven would learn under Mozart's friend, Josef Haydn.
