"Only enemies speak the truth. . ."

Okay, maybe it isn’t only your enemies who tell the truth but what is it about those who are irritated or unhappy that makes them so usefully candid?  Why is it our enemies deliver such a clear picture of our flaws?  Perhaps it is a level of scrutiny the content don’t exercise?  The client who is dissatisfied or leaving, the friend who is upset, the competitor that is so focused on finding weaknesses to exploit.  These are not the places to go for warm and fuzzy appreciations and they are certainly not the places to live but they provide great insight into areas ripe for improvement.  Pay attention.
