Henry

Henry at Jamestown (years ago).

Today is Henry's birthday - 11 years.  I don't normally celebrate my children's birthdays online but I'm making an exception.  Benjamin is the image for CO (upper lefthand corner of this page), but Henry seems to capture the spirit - amused.

"Where's Henry?" is a common question around the house.  Henry disappears.  When the days are hot, he wanders off; when they are cold, he wanders out.

When he was three or four, after several days of heavy rain, the creek next to our house had become a raging river.  Suddenly we realized that Henry had gone missing.  I sprinted out to the edge of the creek, frantically looking and yelling for him.  There is a bike path on the other side of the creek and a man walking yelled across: "You looking for a little boy and a dog?"  "Yes," I yelled back.  "They are walking back toward your house," he replied, pointing to the woods behind the house.  "I think they wanted to cross the creek together but I told them to get back home."  Henry was upset that he and Ramsey didn't get to try.

Henry's namesake was Henry Barricklow, my grandfather (DC's son-in-law), who also liked to disappear - he once decided to hitch a train out west and live with the Indians.  He might have stayed but his mother called him home to work in the family store:

Two Henry's ("Barry" (L) and "Henry" (R))

I was looking in our attic for a picture and came across a Commemorative Biographical Record of Harrison, Ohio.  Inside, I discovered Henry's history.  The first of his line was born in November, 1772 near New Brunswick, N.J.  Henry Barricklow was the son of Conrad Barricklow who fought in the Revolutionary War.  Conrad's father (no name) came to the U.S. from Holland in 1732 with his brother (no name) who settled on Long Island.

Henry moved to Fayette County, Pennsylvania with his new wife.  And in 1809 they moved again, this time to Ohio to start a life.  Henry was justice of the peace in Harrison County.  He and his wife had eight children, the fifth named Henry, but the second named John and the third named Joseph.  John and his wife had two children: Henry and R.W.  Joseph (a farmer) and his wife (Phoebe) had three children, one named Henry (a banker and "land collector"); to this Henry we were given our Henry's great grandfather and great uncle, pictured above, disappearing on a pleasant day.  What a history for Henry.
