I was influenced by the video on this song. Released on January 1, 1983, U2's "New Year's Day" was one of the early heavy rotation videos on MTV when MTV used to play music videos. If there was a party in Bowling Green, Ohio during the winter of 1983, you can bet this video showed up on the television set several times during the evening (I should associate it with Iron City Light Beer). "New Year's Day" was written as a love song for lead singer Bono's wife but became a tribute to the Polish Solidarity movement.
The song was the first of U2's releases to crack the UK Top 20 where it peaked at #10 (it made it to #53 on the Billboard Hot 100). The song marked the beginning of U2's rise to stardom:
