"Steady as you go"

There are so many things to like about George Schultz's talk before The Economic Club of New York.  The message is clear and well-reasoned but notice some other parts of the talk:

The language is free of acronym's and cliches.

His voice is conversational.  He uses pauses effectively as well as hand gestures and verbal outlines.

The presentation is free of gimmicks; the information is the value.

He explains what he is going to say, says it and then summarizes - all without PowerPoint.  I'd love to know whether teleprompters were used.

He uses stories to reinforce.

He looks comfortable.

A seminar in public speaking and economics.

I remember George Schultz once explaining the best thing about working for Ronald Reagan was knowing Reagan held the same basic beliefs when he woke up in the morning that he held when he went to bed the night before.  Steady as you go.

"Set policies in place that are consistent with prosperity without inflation."  What a concept.

He also carries off a bow tie well.

Back in the day, George Schultz was BY FAR my favorite of all of those Californians and the people they hired. Full of real character, I thought. The kind that 'should' speak to a vast majority of us. It's getting rarer. It doesn't impress anymore. Less and less is it a valued competency. "Winning...!"
