Unofficially official

I am a candidate.

I've run for public office once before in my life.

My memories of that race for city council were punctuated by a single vivid one:  I looked out my sun room window one Saturday morning to see a yard sign for my opponent in the neighbor's yard
.  It was the best thing to happen to me.  Just the kick in the pants I needed to run and win.

It appears I won't have an "opponent" in my run for our local school board.  The good:  I don't have to ask people for money, print yard signs, ask people if I can put a sign in their yard.  The bad:  It is disappointing that there isn't more interest in such a local position.

I like the idea of citizens running for public office, serving and then leaving so another individual can serve and understand the important community issues from another perspective.  I think government would be better if it happened this way.  But it doesn't.

I'll keep you posted.  Article in The Newark Advocate on the school board race here.

Thanks to everyone who signed my petitions and to those who helped distribute them (Steve, John, Kim and my mother).  Another great thing about running for public office is talking with people about local issues.
