"A mild winter day - mostly clear and warm enough to thaw a half inch crust of earth that froze last month.  In places exposed to the sun, the ground is thawed thru.  I have seen no fish worms on the surface this year as is often the case in mild weather of January.  The past month has been mild.  Very little precipitation.  The rivers have scarcely been roiled.  As I was walking along the Tuscarawas today, I could see bottom everywhere except in the deepest places - so clear and shallow is the river now.  It brings a fear and dread that our wonderful rivers might someday shrink in volume as have our spring drains and brooks in the last forty years.  They have either dwarfed pitifully or my eyes of childhood magnified them mightily.  Had two more teeth pulled last week.  Have four left.  Will soon have them out.

Dot and Gene are in Toledo this weekend."
