Reading ink
View from the Ledge on reading ink:
"[In grade school, we all had daily subscriptions to the local newspapers in the classroom. We were given three choices - The New York Times, The Herald Tribune, and I think it was The Journal American. Nobody read the Journal American, and the Herald Tribune was indistinct. But if you read the Times, you were smart.

Once a week we picked an article and wrote about it - and judged on content and penmanship."
Ben had a similar assignment last night (fortunately he will not be judged on penmanship). We discussed the three articles he was assigned to read. It was a good exercise.

They stopped teaching penmanship long ago. Is "penmanship" still a word?

Don't need penmanship if you're not gonna do it in longhand.
