Why we pack lunches

Liam Julian looks at the history of U.S. school lunches and explains why the food is nasty:
"[T]he USDA had announced plans to buy $14 million worth of fatty dark-meat chicken in order to address a glut in chicken stocks. The purchase, Reuters reported, would 'be used by food banks, school lunch programs, and other food assistance programs.' Incidents such as this give much credence to the contention that the USDA’s responsibilities — to balance agricultural markets and also provide healthful food to American children — are irreconcilably contradictory and that the school food program should be coordinated by another federal agency."
