The mirror and the window

We get to learn using both the mirror and the window. The mirror reflects what we did. The window looks at others. Both have a proper place and both are widely abused.
When something goes wrong, the window is a popular place. "If they would have been clearer. . ." "If the other department had moved it along. . ." "If Bill was competent. . ." All would be better. The world is full of window-watchers. They hang out in the hallways together. They huddle at lunch. They see the breakdowns in all other processes. They diagnose problems superbly, provided they reside elsewhere. Their analytical powers are amazing as long as the subject is outside the window.
When something goes right, we flock to the mirror. We remember our role in the success. The key advice we gave. The hard work. The relationship-building skills. The organizational skills. Behold the mirror.
We should try switching the common usage for each device. Next time something goes wrong, what would happen if we all spent a few extra moments in front of the mirror. Not to flog ourselves, but to reflect a bit on what we'll do better next time.
And the window can provide incredible value during a success. Did we notice what a great job the programmers did? The first impression came from our fabulous receptionist. Do we remember the great advice Bill offered? The team put in long hours. Let's spend some time reviewing what went well. Behold the window.
