Teach your children
John Derbyshire takes aim at America's education romanticism:
"This missionary ideal has utterly corrupted American education. Where, after all, are the benighted heathens to be found? At the bottom of the ability scale, that’s where. So all our efforts in public education are tilted towards 'helping the disadvantaged.' Unintelligent, unmotivated students are showered with resources, while those who will benefit most from teaching are neglected."
Read on.
Derbyshire is on to something but there is an unstated point worth stating: If you want your child to get a good education then educate your child. Don't complain about the education establishment until you have taught your child. Teach your child to love reading. Teach your child music. Teach your child to understand history. Teach your child science and math. We have been told that no child will be left behind and that is a lie. Any parent that doesn't take an active role in their child's education should be prepared to watch their child be left behind.
My great grandfather, DC Richard, never went to college. He delivered mail and taught himself the classics in the evening. One year he read Shakespeare; the next he read world history. He was a bright, successful man who led a happy life because he educated himself.
Thanks, David.

Teach your child the wonder of inquiry ... exploring! As your Great Grandfather demonstrated so purposefully, there is no substitute for motivation.
