"God damn it was beautiful"

I posted on Major General Anthony Wayne's emphasis on proper grooming and dress earlier this week. In response, Tim was kind enough to send a picture of General Patton's proposed uniform for tank crewman - green leather, red stripes, a row of brass buttons topped off by a gold football helmet. Enjoy the movie explanation.

God Damn, that's hilarious.
God bless the tankers. I was stationed with them in a barely known Infantry unit at Fort Knox. They did an incredible job, but some of the things they did were I just couldn't explain.
As for Patton, my Uncle served under him as an Infantryman in WW2. I found numerous letters home, some heartbreaking, that proved what I thought were just war stories were just children's versions of the truth. More than a few times I heard him say, "Patton - his glory our guts.".

Oh yeah. George Scott did a great job in it.
Looking at the jacket, I wonder how many of his uniform ideas did stick. They had many things that were different. They needed uniforms that didn't snag on anything. The inside of a tank has something to snag on at every turn. Even their boots were different so the shoe laces didn't snag. Of course, arguments were started when we asked them if it was because they couldn't tie their shoes.
