    Lies, darn lies, and statistics.

I hate to hear them spout off numbers. They never tell you how they arrive at the numbers. When you try to chase the numbers down from government figures on websites, things never add up. There are always fine print explanations telling you why the numbers are wrong.

I just wanted to see if Obama's figures on Medicare fraud were reasonable. Did you ever just try to find out how many people are on Medicare? That should be an easy number to find out, but every report has some sort of disclaimer to let you know that the data is incorrect. I came up with $1900/per person using averages from the government guesses of the numbers.

From what I can see Obama doesn't know the numbers. If he came out and told us that he doesn't have accurate numbers and it's all Bush's fault, I would believe that one! He would have to rely on previous data to find that out. Not the case though, he rolls these numbers out like they are solid.

A little off topic, but Obama stated that he knew the amount of Medicare fraud, but I'm sure he can't tell you how many people are on it. If you know the amount of fraud, wouldn't you have to know who was committing the fraud and how many people were on the system? Cutting fraud is supposed to be one of the cost savings, but the government is already allowing fraud to occur at a rate that nobody can define. Private entities that depend on profit will have their fraud prevention methods removed and faulty government systems put in place, so fraud will grow and costs will go up.
