The jukebox
I was reading about great jukebox songs - Dean Martin's "Volare", Tony Bennett's "Rags to Riches", Derek and the Dominos' "Layla", Jerry Vale's "Pretend You Don't See Her", Willie Nelson and Julio Inglesias's "To All The Girls I've Loved Before". As an exercise I built my own jukebox playlist on my iPod. All of the above songs were included but then I mentally placed myself in an old comfortable restaurant on a Saturday evening with an endless supply of quarters. What selections would I put on my jukebox?
Frank Sinatra - "Strangers in the Night"
Kenny Rogers - "Coward of the County"
George Jones - "He Stopped Loving Her Today"
Patsy Cline - "Crazy"
Tom Waits - "Downtown Train"
Bruce Springsteen - "Rosalita"
England Dan and John Ford Coley - "I'd Really Love To See You Tonight"
Dwight Yoakam - "Little Sister"
Bill Withers - "Just The Two of Us"
Crowded House - "Don't Dream It's Over"
The Eagles - "Hotel California"
Tommy Tutone - "8675309 (Jenny)"
Garth Brooks - "Much Too Young to Feel This Damn Old"
Sade - "Smooth Operator"
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - "Don't Do Me Like That"
The Mavericks - "Blue Moon"
Joe Jackson - "Is She Really Going Out With Him"
What else belongs?
Update: Idea Anaconda helps (kicking myself for The Beatles oversight but kicking the jukebox so it skips past Snoop). Eclecticity made a selection. On my own I've added Eddy Arnold's "Make the World Go Away", Darius Rucker's "Alright", Bruce Hornsby's "The Way It Is", and Sarah Vaughan's "How High the Moon".
Update: This has become a mission. More later, but Steve Layman has helped at Anderson Layman's Blog.
Update: Execupundit has added some gems.
Update: Progress on this important project here.

Several years ago my old and good friends Shawn and Jennifer and I used to go drinking at night at a place on RT 13 called the Pub (Barn). They had a glass mug of beer bigger than Stuttgart called the "haymaker". It was like 3 beers. They had a wood stove and they had a great jukebox. We would sit by the stove and drink beer and I would play the jukebox. We always played the Garth Brooks song "The Dance". When I hear that song now--I always think of them and the story Shawn told me about the song.

I remember that too - good times! Although as in several years ago, you mean ALMOST 20! 1992-1993...good years!

Twenty years ago??? You have to be kidding. What was I doing drinking Haymakers when I was seven?

How about - Whiter Shade of Pale - Procol Harum?

Procol Harum is added to the jukebox - a quarter a play; five plays for a dollar. Snopp shan't be joining us.

Just posted 17 favorites. Started out trying to make it a cohesive unit, then said "screw it". Paring the list down is the hard work. Great idea.
