"Number one day gone. It is night.  E. is sitting by the radio knitting and I am writing with Ritz begging to do something but I can't divine his mind.  Walking in the Foster bottoms today.  Dorotha, Mc, and Mary E. here for dinner.  About three thirty the dogs and I went to the farm in the car.  Parked just off the road in the snow and had a heck of a time getting out.  That is one sore spot about this farm life - sand, mud, snow and a car can combine to make a lot of annoyance for a fellow.  I always have plenty of sacks and rags in the car so I can get traction and have not had to be pulled out yet but it is wear and tear on a car just the same.  The levee was criss crossed by a maze of rabbit tracks, also the pond refuge and wherever there was a large pile of drift.

Flushed a covey of quail.  They must be having a hard time to find food.  Saw about thirty wild ducks.  Found a few ears of corn which I shelled and placed in the sheltered places for wild life food.  With 8 inches of snow and much deeper in places on the wide bottoms bordered by the river bluffs, the winter picture was complete.  The green river, frozen to silence in places made all a perfect winter wonderland.

My heart runneth over with joy.  When I behold all this I am immensely satisfied with such a playground.  The old boat is sticking its nose out of the river ice.  This is unfinished business and a neglect of the old year.  Our boat management can be considerably improved this year."

"Thawing weather.  There has been such a heavy coat of ice on the street that it has made the bicycle hazardous.  The snow is leaving gradually without a flood.  Heard a tomtit's spring notes today."
