Note: D.C. didn't write much in the winter. There are long gaps in his entries for those months so I've decided to bounce around years a bit.
"Fine winter month. Wally River clear, only a little shore ice. At the farm this morning hunting, saw a duck, some doves and a rabbit - did not get a shot. Ground frozen, bright sunshine, frosty. Found a trappers boat tied to the bank. It is a wonder that my wildlife can escape. How glad I am that the beautiful river cannot easily be destroyed. Much of my time is spent walking around, observing and planning next year's work. I just can't decide whether to equip with a tractor and machinery or sharecrop next year.
I'm not so well-pleased with my share of corn and believe I've been shorted 100 bushel or more. This is always a sharecropper's complaint. It's annoying."

Do you know what he means by "Wally River"? I've never heard of it.

Walhonding River. I should have noted that. It ran beside his property. He loved that river.
