"This is Tuesday and the first five-hours off on our 40 hour week at the post office.  I was off in the fore noon; Saturday before last for all day was the very first.  I got up early, fried mush for breakfast, took a walk to the river bank with Ritz where I talked farm with Jake Banks for a short time.  Jake has a little farm of his own and quite proud of it.  He keeps a cow here in town and tethers it in the grassy places in the gasoline tank lot.  Came home and raked leaves then got out car and went after sweeper over at Dot's.  Mary Ellen was just getting her breakfast.  I played with her, that delightful personage in miniature, for a time and fed her a few bites: once dropping a little on her nightie which was dully noticed by her and pronounced quite the wrong thing to do.  She is charming and interesting.  Ritz was with me an he always is a highlight for her.  As we were leaving, Pomerene's big red dog and Ritz had a quarrel.

Went to the farm where I planned out a corn crib or some sort of building.  I expect to use some bridge timbers that were washed in by the flood.  For some time I dug in a drift pile to loosen them but will have to use a crowbar,

The alfalfa is cut and laying on the ground thoroughly wet by the rain.  It's not much good anyway as the dead, flood ruined hay is mixed in it.  The wheat is up nicely.  Ritz scared out one rabbit.  The dogs caught one last Saturday afternoon too.

Rowdy came home this afternoon after having been gone since yesterday morning.  Probably was stolen by someone as she does not seem to be courting."
