Quotation for a Sunday -John Westerhoff III

"Wherever truth is discovered or communicated, righteousness discerned and proclaimed, there is religion.  Many of these activities are better done by institutions other than the church, and religious people will best engage in such religious activities outside its confines.   The church has a tendency to believe it must find activities within itself to keep people busy if it is to maintain their interest and commitment.  But most of these activities compare unfavorably, both in their urgency and effectiveness, with occupation in society.  This (Willard) Sperry points out, is what makes a great deal of church work both artificial and adventitous.  The church resorts to keeping marginal time, occupying people's strength and interest, forgetting the work which matters is the sum of the daily activities of its members in trades, professions and households."
