"A dry spot in the weather for the last few days. If it continues I'll get a chance to use the hose for once this summer.
The one theme of mine that is overshadowing all others is the flood devastated bottoms, and I presume that I'll not get over it until next spring when we can plant again and heal this awful eyesore.
I thought at first the bottom land would green up this fall, but not so. They are as bare and dry as the dead of winter. Only a few dead weeds in places and dry corn stalks on the bare ground. A few live, more cockle burs, smart weed, horse nettle and here and there a clump of wild grass or sedge.
Many farmers met to try to get some help from the government but to no purpose so far. It has taken much of the enjoyment for me from the river or practically all of it. I see now it was the rich growing bottom land combined with the life-giving rivers - the two that inspired me. That same beneficent river can also deal death as well as life."
