Thanks

Every once in awhile I think about how lucky I am.

At every step in my life, I have walked into good things:  Good opportunities, good friends, good family members (I actually adore my in laws), good clients, good kids.

And I associate good things with certain people:

George Jones - Thanks, Tim.
Mozart - Thanks, Rob.
William F. Buckley, Jr. - Thanks, Mom and Dad.
H.L. Mencken - Thanks, Baa.
Aristotle - Thanks, Dr. Holmberg.
Blogging - Thanks, Michael, Nicholas, E. and John
Beer - Thanks, Dave.
Jim Harrison - Thanks, Rob.
Suits - Thanks, Patrick

You get the point.  Take anything good in my life and I associate it with someone who introduced me to that good thing.  A writer, a movie, a song, a book, a good experience - in my mind, there is someone associated with that.

The good news is that I don't do the same thing with dislikes.  I forget dislikes.  Sean Penn fades from my memory quickly.  People that I have disliked in the past blur (I am great with names EXCEPT people I dislike).  I try to remember salient points from mistakes so that I don't repeat them.  But in general, I forget the bad, remember the good and live one hell of a life.

A typical week:

  • I came down the steps of my house this past weekend and my wife said that my friend, Todd, was outside dropping off fire wood because he noticed that my pile had gotten low.
  • I was in the airport waiting for my plane to leave and my buddy Tim calls to check in on me:  "How were your meetings. . ?"  He tells a funny story, and ends the conversation with "travel safe."
  • I'm in the kitchen and Jim stops by so that I can try a couple of new beers that he picked up.
  • I leave the automatic teller machine and my cell phone rings.  Jeff says "hey, what's going on today?"
  • My daughter, Maddie, tells me a funny story about school on the way home from riding practice.
  • David sends me a very funny Dilbert cartoon.  I laugh.
  • My boss gives me a great idea for a new direct mail piece.
  • Employees come to my office with really good solutions for a client issue.
I'm one lucky son-of-a-gun.  Thanks, everyone.
