Steyn on Hammerstein. . .and RINOs

My buddy - and editorial board member - David, noted today that Jay Nordlinger has a particular appreciation for "the good stuff."  The good stuff being Johnson (Paul), Sowell and Steyn.

The other day I read Colin Powell's advice for Republicans (I've forgotten most of it already but it had something to do with shifting to the left).  Sorry.  My motto has always been to take care of my friends. . .  I don't spend a lot of time listening to Colin Powell anymore.  Powell has that most dangerous trait among Republicans:  He attempted to "grow," in a way defined by Democrats.  For Democrats and liberals grow means "support us."

Growing is an odd trait picked up by Republicans in Name Only (RINOs).  They don't understand 1) liberals and their zero-sum view of the world; and 2) who they are.  I remember an interview with leftist Christopher Hitchens after he departed from the left to support the Iraq war.  The interviewer asked him which side was more vicious, the right or the left.  Hitchens answered definitively that the left was far more vicious.  The right, he claimed, enjoyed an argument and disagreement while the left felt the need to crush opponents.  Whittaker Chambers said much the same thing.

Nordlinger addresses the Powell issue here.  I haven't listened to Rush Limbaugh in years.  It isn't that I don't like him, I just prefer my iPod in the car.  But I'd choose lunch with Limbaugh over Powell any day of the week.

But I ramble.  Here is a great article on Oscar Hammerstein by Mark Steyn.
