In Praise of AC/DC

As I handed my copy of AC/DC's latest musical offering, Black Ice, to the nice checkout woman at Wal Mart, she smiled:  "Must be the day for AC/DC," she said.  "I've sold lots of these today."  I told her that it just came out today and she nodded her head.  "Must be for all ages.  I've sold it to teenagers and people much older than you," she said.  I smiled and thought that she got it right.

The Australian rockers span several generations in their appeal.  And even though they would be classified as hard rock, they seem to fit in a genre all by themselves.  Like Sinatra, Elvis and The Beatles, they are simply AC/DC.  Before I forget, the latest album is wonderful.  Dare I say that you would have to go back to Back in Black to match the quality of the latest release.

For those of you familiar with AC/DC (hell, for the rest of you as well), allow me to provide some cross-cultural analogies for AC/DC:

Food - They are the cream-filled, chocolate-covered donut of rock.  The Hardee's Thick Burger, the Wendy's Baconator of rock.  They are the Frito's Scoops filled with french onion dip.  The several tall draft beers that you drink.  They shouldn't be this good, but they are.

Sports - They are the fastball pitcher who comes to the mound with a swagger.  You know exactly what you are going to get but are still impressed.  Straight gas.  They are the back who runs right up the middle.

Business - So many analogies and great lessons.  This is a group that knows who they are.  They know who their customer is and never forget the "voice" of that customer.  No long, ponderous ballads or political statements because that isn't what they do.  Masters of distribution (don't look to Amazon.com for this album), their albums are guaranteed to sell millions, their concerts sell out in minutes.  They do what they do best and that is rock and roll.

You get the idea.  I've already said too much because that isn't what AC/DC is about.  With a wink and a smile they are about the music.  Enjoy.
