Trying to succeed versus trying not to fail
Often you notice the difference between individuals who work so they don't fail versus those who work to succeed. Those trying not to fail stiffen up, are very cautious and are self-defeating. In trying not to fail they fail to succeed.
I notice it in business but also with kids playing sports. People trying to succeed are out there hacking, getting the most out of every opportunity.
Many times in sports trying not to fail is caused by a parent who is telling the kid not to strike out or not to make a mistake. What kid wants to strike out or walk the next batter or make a bad play? In the process of trying to help the kid succeed, the parent has instilled a fear of failure that overcomes a desire to hit the ball, make the play or throw a great pitch.
I thought of this when I read Michael Wade's great post on ways that great ideas are squelched.
I personally like the people who are out there hacking away and getting the most out of every "at bat."
