Take The Private Road Home

When Indiana offered private companies the opportunity to enter into long-term leases on public roads, it was estimated that Chicago's Skyway might fetch $900 million under the right terms.  Instead the deal netted $1.8 billion in a 99-year lease.  The Pepsi freeway, Home Depot highway or Marv's bridge not sound right?  A study commissioned by Indiana Governor, Mitch Daniels, after he took office, found that it cost the state 34 cents to collect every 15-cent toll.  As states and municipalities struggle with revenue, experiments such as Indiana's will become important case studies.  City Journal offers an excellent overview of the topic.
